Chapter 21

As we left the marina, I could feel Kailey’s eyes on me, waiting for an answer that I wasn’t ready to give. Renting a plane wasn’t as simple as walking into the nearest airstrip and asking for keys. But with El Tiburón on the move, we couldn’t waste time.

We headed back toward the main road and I pulled out my phone, scrolling through contacts. Most were long shots, people I hadn’t spoken to in years or those I knew I couldn’t ask for favors. But then I remembered a small airfield just north of Key Largo where the planes were rented by the hour, no questions asked.

“There’s a small place a few miles up the road,” I said. “I’ve used it a couple of times before. It’s nothing fancy, but the planes are airworthy.”

Kailey nodded, her expression serious. “Do you think we’ll find him?”

“If he’s in the area, we will.” I hoped my voice sounded more confident than I felt. El Tiburón wasn’t an amateur—he’d know how to stay hidden. But with the right altitude and some luck, we might spot his yacht before it slipped away again.

We drove in silence for a while, the Overseas Highway stretching out before us. I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were chasing a ghost, but we had no other choice. We needed to find that yacht before he struck again.

Finally, we turned onto a narrow, unmarked road that led to the airfield. The runway was little more than a strip of asphalt flanked by a couple of hangars and a small office. A few single-engine planes were parked outside, their paint faded under the relentless Florida sun.

“This is the place,” I said, parking the car. “Wait here. I’ll see what they’ve got available.”

Kailey grabbed my arm as I reached for the door. “Be careful who you talk to, Cam. We can’t afford any slip-ups.”

“Don’t worry,” I said, squeezing her hand. “I’ve got this.”

I stepped out of the car and walked toward the office, my mind already running through the checklist I’d need to go over before we took off. Finding El Tiburón wouldn’t be easy, but it was our best shot at stopping him before he vanished again. And this time, I wasn’t letting him slip through my fingers.

I walked to the office door and was surprised to see a light inside. I pushed the door open and stepped into a small room that smelled of burned coffee and something I couldn’t recognize.

Toby Weaver was sitting at an over-cluttered desk where he had his feet propped up on the slide-out writing table. He was lowering his cup as he looked my way.

“Cam Derringer. What have you come to destroy this time?”

“Toby, how’s it going?”

“I can’t complain,” he said as he turned the volume down on the Fox News Channel.

“Well, I need a plane for a few hours,” I said.

“Where ya headed?”

“Around the area.”

“You’re looking for something, huh?”

I didn’t offer any information.

He smiled. “172?”

“Perfect,” I said,

He scooted a clipboard across the desk and I signed my name.
